This activity consists of a webinar on nutrigenetics and nutrigenomics and the ethical implications in the dietetic practice. The webinar is presented by Associate Professor Janetta Harbron, ADSA Advocacy and Knowledge Transfer portfolio holder and a senior lecturer at the University of Cape Town.
An outline of the topics include:
- An overview of important terms and definitions in nutrition related genetic research.
- Knowledge of direct to consumer (DTC) tests/companies available in South Africa, their products, costs, genetic variants that they include and the recommendations that they make.
- The complexity involved in genetic research.
- The inclusion of genetic testing in the nutrition care process.
- An overview of policies/laws governing genetic testing and DTC.
- The ethical implications of DTC testing.
- Components of personalized/precision nutrition and possible future technologies.
After watching the webinar, live or recorded, answer a set of multiple-choice questions to pass the activity and qualify for CEU. This activity is accredited for 1 ethics CEU.
